About Only Murders in the Building Seasons 1–5
The Arconia is the kind of Upper West Side apartment building where the doorman knows everything and the residents know nothing about each other — until a fire alarm, a dead neighbour (Tim Kono, elevator, gun), and three strangers marooned in the same elevator discover they share one passion: a true-crime podcast. Only Murders in the Building (Hulu, 2021– ), created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, pairs Martin — as Charles-Haden Savage, a washed-up TV detective (“Brazzos”) investigating a real murder with his old character’s catchphrases — with Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam, a bankrupt Broadway director who sees every clue as material, and Selena Gomez’s Mabel Mora, the deadpan twenty-something renovating her aunt’s flat and carrying the case’s buried centre. They do the obvious thing: solve it, and record a podcast about solving it.
Each season is a new corpse and a new production: the Arconia’s secrets (a second murder, a painting, a hidden passageway), Bunny Folger’s killing and the trio framed for it, then Broadway itself — Oliver’s comeback musical Death Rattle, a murdered leading man (Paul Rudd, twice) — then Hollywood, as the podcast becomes a movie and the Arconia’s west tower produces a body with ties to a doorman’s death, and season five (2025) digs into the building’s newest victim and the old-money underworld underneath. The guest cast is a hall of fame in rotation: Rudd, Meryl Streep (as Oliver’s leading lady and love), Tina Fey as the rival podcaster, Sting as himself, a suspect, in residence.
What makes it more than a novelty is the architecture: underneath the whodunit machinery — genuinely fair-play mysteries, planted clues, finale reveals — sits a story about loneliness and the families strangers build: an ageing actor, a broke optimist and a young woman with one foot out the door, saving each other weekly. Short gives the performance of his life in Oliver’s glitter and panic; Martin plays Charles’ caution as comedy and sorrow at once; Gomez, cast as the straight line, became the show’s anchor and its most quoted voice.
A signature hit of the streaming comedy era: Emmy winner (including for Nathan Lane and the show’s music), a cultural fixture that made “true-crime podcast” a genre television could lovingly parody from inside, and that apartment building — the Arconia, played by the real Belnord — into one of TV’s great addresses. Five seasons in, the trio remains undefeated: every body in the building is theirs.
This 10-disc DVD box set collects seasons 1–5 in one place: every case in the Arconia and beyond, from Tim Kono to season five’s final reveal — ready to rewatch with no streaming service able to evict it.
