About Mom Seasons 1–8
Christy Plunkett (Anna Faris) is a waitress in Napa, newly sober, raising two kids in the wreckage of her own bad decades — and doing it under the daily supervision of the woman who caused half of them: her mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney), herself an addict in recovery, breezing back into Christy’s life with a sponsor’s wisdom and a con artist’s muscle memory. Mom (CBS, 2013–2021), from Chuck Lorre, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker, is built as a bright multi-cam sitcom with a serious skeleton: Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, relapse arithmetic, amends attempted and botched. Its masterstroke is tone — addiction played neither as sermon nor punchline but as the weather these women live in, funny because they are funny even in the rain.
Janney won two Emmys for Bonnie, and the performance is one of the great sitcom creations: vain, grandiose, terrorised by guilt, ferociously loving, incapable of a small entrance. Faris, the show’s underestimated straight-woman engine for seven seasons, plays Christy as the family’s first responder — studying law between shifts, parenting her kids and her mother simultaneously. The AA circle around them becomes the ensemble: Marjorie, the group’s serene den mother; Wendy; Jill, the wealthy divorcée whose generosity and damage are equally bottomless; and Tammy, Bonnie’s ex-cellmate foster-sister, played by Kristen Johnston with a wrecking ball’s subtlety.
Across eight seasons the stories go where network sitcoms were not supposed to: overdose deaths in the meeting room, a daughter following Christy into addiction, cancer, prison, adoption, homelessness, a wedding inside a recovery meeting — and, relentlessly, jokes good enough to carry all of it. The Plunkett family slowly, plausibly reassembles: Christy to law school, Bonnie to a real marriage (to Rainn Wilson’s gentle, broken Adam), Violet — Christy’s daughter — out of the cycle and eventually out of the show’s daily life, as recovery’s math demands.
When Faris departed after season seven, the show did something rare: it admitted the hole and played the final season as Bonnie’s — a woman learning to be the family’s adult without her favourite person to adult at — and closed as one of the most respected comedies of its decade, the rare network hit that addiction counsellors recommend and audiences rewatch like comfort food. Its 170 episodes never once suggested recovery was a finish line, which is exactly why it works as one.
This DVD box set collects all eight seasons in one place: from Christy’s first resentful coffee with her mother to the series’ final meeting — ready to rewatch with no streaming service able to cut the circle off.

Took a chance on this one and I am glad I did. The discs are held firmly in their trays, which I appreciate. Great value for the episode count.

Upgraded from an old beat-up copy and this is night and day. Plays clean on a standard US player. Cheaper than what I was seeing elsewhere for the same set.

Gift for my dad — he has already watched it twice. Menus load fast and the episode order is easy to follow. For the price you really cannot go wrong.
