About Altered Carbon Seasons 1–2
Takeshi Kovacs wakes up centuries after the defeat of the rebels he fought alongside. His consciousness has been placed in a body he has never seen before, and his freedom comes with an assignment. Laurens Bancroft, a wealthy man whose consciousness survived the destruction of his previous body, wants Kovacs to find out who killed him. A gap in Bancroft's memories leaves room for competing explanations.
In Bay City, a device called a cortical stack can store a person's mind, and a replacement body is known as a sleeve. People with sufficient money can change sleeves and keep backups of their memories. For everyone else, getting another chance can mean living in a body chosen by somebody else. Kovacs needs to learn whose interests are served by that system before he can make sense of what happened to his client.
Police detective Kristin Ortega has reasons to pay close attention to Kovacs and to the body he occupies. He also finds an unlikely ally in Poe, an artificial intelligence who runs a hotel modeled after the work and persona of Edgar Allan Poe. The investigation keeps bringing up parts of Kovacs's earlier life, including his training as an Envoy and the ties he thought had been severed when the rebellion fell.
In the second season, a new assignment takes Kovacs back to his homeworld, Harlan's World, in another sleeve. His search for Quellcrist Falconer draws him into a fresh series of killings and a struggle over the planet's history. Poe, struggling with problems of his own, joins him again. Their friendship offers a rare point of continuity in a story where even a familiar face can belong to someone else.
The two seasons approach the same premise from different directions. The first follows a detective case through a city shaped by inherited wealth, while the second brings Kovacs closer to the people and causes that made him a soldier. Across both, the ability to survive death leaves his most difficult questions about loyalty unresolved.
