About Metalocalypse Seasons 1–4
Dethklok is a death-metal band with enough fans to influence the world economy. Its members can fill venues and sell almost anything with their name on it, but ordinary decisions routinely leave them out of their depth. Singer Nathan Explosion takes the music seriously. Getting through a recording session or agreeing on how to spend a day off can test his patience as much as anything that happens onstage.
The other musicians bring their own habits into the band. Lead guitarist Skwisgaar is quick to remind people of his skill, particularly when rhythm guitarist Toki wants to be taken seriously. Pickles has years of experience in the music business, while bassist Murderface wants recognition and rarely finds a graceful way to ask for it. Their arguments give the series a way to turn a conversation about a song into a much bigger dispute.
Manager Charles Offdensen handles arrangements that the musicians have little interest in understanding. Keeping the business running can involve lawyers, elaborate security, and damage control after an appearance goes disastrously wrong. The contrast between his attention to detail and the band's indifference gives the show some of its driest jokes. A problem he has spent considerable time containing can start again as soon as the musicians decide to handle it themselves.
A secret tribunal watches the band's activities and tries to determine what its influence means. Its members take Dethklok's rise seriously enough to treat a concert or a new recording as a matter of international concern. Those scenes run alongside stories about the musicians' personal rivalries and business ventures. The audience gets to see decisions the band treats casually take on a much larger significance elsewhere.
Over four seasons, the animated series alternates between performances, disputes inside the group, and the growing efforts of outsiders to understand or control it. The band can make a room full of people respond to a single riff, yet the five musicians still struggle to agree on what they owe one another when the show ends.
