A Christmas movie night can be a quiet evening with a familiar story, a festive mystery, or an action comedy that gives everyone something to talk about afterwards. The best choice depends on who is watching and the kind of evening you want to create.
If you are planning a Christmas Eve watch or choosing something for the holiday break, here are a few ways to find your next film on DVD or Blu-ray.
Start with the Mood of Your Movie Night
Before choosing a title, decide whether you want something seasonal, funny, adventurous or suspenseful. A Christmas special can suit viewers who enjoy familiar characters and a festive setting. An action comedy offers a different pace, while animation and other favourites can make good holiday viewing even when their stories are not about Christmas.
Check the individual film’s age rating and content information when choosing for a mixed-age group.
For Action and Comedy: The Family Plan 1 & 2
If your holiday watchlist needs a change from traditional Christmas stories, The Family Plan 1 & 2 brings together two adventures starring Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan.
In the first film, Dan Morgan’s ordinary family life conceals a dangerous past. When that past catches up with him, an unexpected road trip becomes a way to protect his unsuspecting wife and children.
The sequel takes the Morgan family to Europe during the Christmas holiday season. Dan hopes for time together, but an unresolved threat turns their trip into another unpredictable adventure.
The Family Plan 2 has a Christmas setting; the first film is not primarily a Christmas-themed story. Watching them in order introduces the family before continuing with their holiday getaway.

For a Different Seasonal Choice: A Christmas Mystery
A holiday watch does not have to be a romance or a broad comedy. Viewers who prefer a mystery can explore A Murdoch Mysteries Christmas as another option in the Christmas collection.
When comparing seasonal specials, check the product description for the included title, format and disc details. This is especially useful when buying for someone who already collects a particular series.

DVD or Blu-ray: Check Your Player First
Choose the format your player supports before placing an order. Blu-ray discs require a Blu-ray-compatible player. A standard DVD-only player cannot play them. Blu-ray players generally support DVDs too, but checking your player’s specifications is the safest way to confirm compatibility.
Region-free discs remove the region-code restriction, but they do not change the playback format. A region-free Blu-ray still needs a Blu-ray-compatible player.
On each listing, look for:
- DVD or Blu-ray format
- Included films, seasons or episodes
- Number of discs
- Audio language and subtitles
- Region information
Make the Evening Easy to Enjoy
Choose your film before everyone settles down, check that the player works, and keep the setup simple. A comfortable seat, softer lighting and a bowl of popcorn can be enough.
For a double feature, allow time for a break between films. If you are watching a sequel, starting with the first film can help everyone follow the characters and their relationships.
