About Breaking Bad Seasons 1–5

Walter White teaches chemistry at an Albuquerque high school and works a second job to make ends meet. When he learns he has lung cancer, he starts thinking about what his family will have to live on after he dies. A ride along with his brother-in-law Hank, a federal drug agent, gives him a look at a business where his technical skills could make him money quickly.

Walter recruits Jesse Pinkman, a former student who knows people in the local drug trade. Walter understands the chemistry and Jesse understands enough about selling to know when Walter is out of his depth. Neither can do much without the other at first. Their disagreements over how to handle buyers and competitors reveal how differently they judge danger, and how quickly Walter can make a decision that Jesse will have to live with.

At home, Skyler White has to make sense of her husband's unexplained absences while preparing for a new baby and dealing with news of his illness. Walter's explanations become harder to square with what she sees. Hank, meanwhile, pursues cases that lead him toward the source of an unusually pure product. The family gatherings that bring these people together make it increasingly difficult for Walter to keep his various lives apart.

As the business expands, Walter and Jesse work with people who have established systems for moving money and keeping the authorities away. Lawyer Saul Goodman knows who can make a problem disappear, while Gus Fring understands how to run a criminal operation behind a public business. Working with them gives Walter access to resources he could never assemble on his own, but it also gives other people control he resents.

Across five seasons, Walter keeps returning to the idea that he is acting for his family. Jesse has a closer view of the consequences and increasingly finds reasons to question whether they should continue. Their partnership gives the series a way to show how a decision made to solve an immediate problem can leave people with fewer ways out the next time.
